There is not one art world. There are many, and each one rewards something different. Most artists are told to follow the same path while trying to build completely different careers. The Artist Career Compass looks at where your practice is now, what you actually want from it, how you like to work and your relationship with your own creativity, then maps your practice across five ecosystems: the collector and gallery world, commercial and brand collaboration, a craft and product-led practice, public art and commissioning, and a hybrid of these. It shows which creative ecosystems your practice appears closest to, and where you may want to take it next. It takes around five minutes. There are no right answers.

A note from Lucy

I made the Artist Career Compass because artists are often given career advice as if there is only one serious route. There is not. Some artists need galleries. Some need public art routes, brand collaborations, direct sales, craft markets, better pricing, production support, or a way to hold several things together without losing the work. This tool is a free starting point, built from years of working with artists. It can show a pattern. The best use of it is as a conversation starter.

How do I know what direction to take my art career?

Start by separating where your practice is now from where you want it to go, and be honest about how you like to work and what the work means to you. Those four things together usually point to a direction more reliably than any single ambition. The Artist Career Compass walks through them and gives you a high-level read, and a conversation with Nonesuch Works can take it further.

Should I focus on galleries, public commissions or brand work?

It depends on the kind of work you want to make, how much creative control you need and how you feel about commercial briefs. None is more legitimate than the others. The right path is the one that fits how you work and what you want, which is exactly what this assessment helps you see.

What should an artist focus on next?

The most useful next steps are usually small and concrete: choosing one opportunity to pursue properly, putting simple foundations under the business side, or having one honest conversation with someone experienced. The Compass shows which ecosystem your answers point toward, so you can focus rather than spread yourself thin.

Is the Artist Career Compass free?

Yes. The assessment and the overview result are completely free. Your individual answers are not stored. Only the anonymised ecosystem readings and the shorthand profile are kept, so Nonesuch Works can understand the picture across artists in aggregate. If you choose to share your email after your results, Nonesuch Works sends you a private link back to them; the link carries your answers in encoded form, so nothing extra is stored, and your email is saved only so Nonesuch Works can stay in touch, never linked to your answers. It is built to help artists see their practice more clearly before a conversation.
