Artist Career Compass

There is not one art world. There are many, and each rewards something different. Most artists are told to follow the same path while trying to build completely different careers.

The Compass shows which creative ecosystems your practice sits closest to now, and where you may want to take it next. There are no right answers, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

The assessment

Where you are now

A quick read on the shape of your practice today. There are no right answers.

Where would you place yourself right now?
How much of your income comes from your art at the moment?
How do you sell or show your work today?
How would you describe the audience around your work?
How settled does your body of work feel?
How often do opportunities come your way?
How do you feel about the business side of your practice?

What you want

Where you would like the work to go, rather than where it is now.

How important is earning a living from your art?
What scale of work do you want to be making?
How visible do you want your work to be?
Where do you most picture your work living?
What pace of growth feels right?
In five years, what would matter most?
What appetite do you have for representation or partners?

How you like to work

The day-to-day texture of how you operate.

How do you prefer to work?
How do you relate to structure?
How comfortable are you with financial risk?
How do you feel about promoting your work?
How do money conversations sit with you?
What is your output rhythm like?
How far ahead do you tend to plan?

Your relationship with creativity

The part that matters most. How the work sits within you, beyond the practical side.

What drives your practice most?
How do you feel about adapting work for a commercial brief?
How central is your art to who you are?
Does money change how the work feels to you?
What does success mean to you creatively?
How much creative control do you need?
What keeps you going on a hard day?
Where do you sit on experimenting versus refining?

A map, not a ladder

Some artists need galleries. Some need public art routes, brand collaborations, direct sales, better pricing, production support, or a way to hold several things together without losing the work. We built the Compass because artists are often advised as if there is only one serious route.

It gives a high-level read, not a plan to follow. No ecosystem is better than another, and no assessment can hold the full nuance of your work, circumstances or ambitions. Use the result to notice what feels true, what does not, and what might be worth talking through properly.

Questions

What is the Artist Career Compass?

A free assessment for visual artists. It maps your practice across five ecosystems, from the gallery world to public commissioning, and shows where you sit now and where your answers suggest you want to go. A map for thinking, not a verdict.

How long does it take?

Most artists finish in five to eight minutes. There are four short sections, and you can go back and change answers before you see your result.

Is it free, and what happens to my answers?

It is free. The whole thing runs in your browser: your answers are not sent to us, saved or stored anywhere, and there is no email to give. Close the page and they are gone.

Will it tell me the right way to build my career?

No, and deliberately so. It reads where you and your practice are pointing, not the creative work itself, and no assessment can judge the work or your circumstances. Use the result to see where to focus. For the nuanced version, a conversation is the surer step: a strategy session with Lucy Clarke, who founded Nonesuch Works.
